Description
The publication deals with the history of Syria in the first half of the 20th century, during the final phase of the Ottoman Empire's existence and the subsequent French mandate in the Levant. It attempts to find an answer to the question of why and how the originally vaguely defined Greater Syria transformed into a significantly smaller Syria, within the borders known since gaining independence in 1946 and at least formally existing to this day. It also observes changes in the perception of identities among the local population and various ideologies that spread in this area. The history of Syria is traced in a chronological timeline and divided according to basic periodization milestones (the end of Ottoman rule, the existence of Faisal's kingdom, the Great Syrian Revolt, the Franco-Syrian Treaty of 1936, etc.).
