Description
The book consists of interviews with representatives from three generations of Czech ethnographers and folklorists, who represent various fields of research (the Prague and Brno branches of the Institute of Ethnography and Folkloristics of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, university departments, museums, and open-air museums). The reflective interviews cover various topics related to the development of the discipline before 1989 (such as personal motivations for choosing the field, memories of study time, the everyday functioning of academic, university, or regional institutions, the influence of communist ideology, the issue of research freedom, relationships to theories and methods, etc.). The publication includes selected edited passages from the manuscript of Antonín Robek's memoirs, which relate to the issues of Czech ethnography and folkloristics. It also contains a brief biographical and institutional dictionary.
