Description
The book is a groundbreaking attempt to dispel the purposeful myths about the First World War that have persisted for a century. What was at their core? On the Austrian side, the effort to accuse Czech soldiers of unreliability and treachery to prevent political concessions to the Czech nation; on the Czech side, the attempt to prove to the Allied powers that the Czechs overwhelmingly stood against Austria and therefore deserved support in the matter of establishing an independent Czech state. However, to think that the Czech nation was divided into either Švejk or legionnaires does not reflect reality at all. The author himself writes: 'In both cases, it remained a fact that well over a million Czechs were conscripted into the Austro-Hungarian army and mostly went unnoticed while fulfilling their military duties until the end of the war.'
