Description
The first part, Departure and Return, describes the author's childhood adventure. After the Gestapo arrested his parents, he managed to bribe the small-town authorities, allowing him to leave his then residence by train to relatives in Budapest the day before the transport to the ghetto and Auschwitz, where, with a bit of luck, he could avoid immediate death. The story of a year in which he came of age is concluded with bittersweetly ironic returns. In the second part, Above Under the Darkened Sun, the author writes about the elemental experience that marked his break from childhood and entry into the adult world, about the revolutionary year of 1956, the lives of dissidents, his loves, friends, and family, how he experienced the fall of communism, the years spent in Berlin, and the joys of old age. All these memories are articulated by György Konrád with his characteristic openness and immediacy.
