Description
The treatise Useful Discussion on Waging War Against the Turks with an Explanation of Psalm 28 (Utilissima consultatio de bello Turcis inferendo et obiter enarratus Psalmus XXVIII) by Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam (1466/9–1536) was written and first published in 1530, shortly after the tumultuous events in Vienna, which had been besieged by Turkish forces the previous autumn. Although the Turks ultimately lifted the siege, Europe remained in a state of permanent uncertainty and fear of Turkish expansion. Under these circumstances, Erasmus decided to engage in the debate about war with the Turks and discuss the arguments for and against waging it in the Useful Discussion. However, the main goal of the treatise is to address how to wage war successfully if it does occur, and since the key to success lies in the Christian approach to faith and morality, an interpretation of Psalm 28 is skillfully incorporated into the text.
