The Moravian Karst is our best-developed karst area with the largest number of surface and underground karst phenomena. At the same time, it is one of the exceptional regions of the Czech Republic with a rich history and culture. The picturesque landscape interwoven with deep canyons is a refuge for a wide range of animals and plants, and many endemics have been described here. This small part of our republic, located north of Brno, has been the focus of many authors (in word and image) for several centuries. They include herbalists, clergy, artists, historians, speleologists, geographers, geologists, and experts from various scientific disciplines. As a result, a number of guides, extensive descriptive popular and scholarly monographs, photographic publications, and thousands of separata, brochures, and articles have been created about the Moravian Karst. Nevertheless, new connections and insights continue to emerge in many fields. Cave researchers are discovering new caves or parts of already known caves, and often-overlooked historical documents, maps, or photographs are stored in archives.
