Drawing on newly released archival materials from all the countries involved, he convincingly analyzes the political impact of Soviet economic exploitation and the emergence of a new national myth that allowed Austria to temporarily escape its Nazi past. Austrian diplomacy succeeded in persuading both the world and its own population that Austria had been Hitler’s victim.
