Description
The authors focus on the pan-Arab movement of the Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliated political parties and movements. In addition to the circumstances of its emergence and the history of its regional branches, they have taken a closer look at the present and assessed the impacts of the military coup that ousted Egyptian President Mursi. They pay particular attention to those countries where the Muslim Brothers or their sympathizers have managed to create a political party or movement that has become a significant segment of the national political scene (as a parliamentary party, government party, or main opposition force). Their reform potential was also examined. The movements and parties were assessed based on their positions on the following issues: secularization, the role of Islam and Islamic law in society, views on political pluralism and parliamentary democracy, attitudes towards religious minorities or ethnic minorities, non-governmental organizations and civil society, terrorism and violence, preferred characteristics of state legal arrangements and economic models, foreign policy orientation, understanding of human rights and fundamental democratic freedoms, and solutions to social problems.
