Description

This collection of reflections, memories and short pieces by Zlín publicist František Bobák (1926–2008) also includes his essays and is presented in Czech. In his youth, Bobák belonged to the so-called Baťa’s young men, then studied at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague and worked as a secondary-school teacher. During the Communist regime, however, his political views and professed Catholic faith prevented him from working in education for many years. In November, he co-founded Civic Forum in Zlín. The texts appeared from the 1990s until 2005 or 2006 in various regional periodicals or were broadcast on the radio. Bobák commented on current social events, while, as Ludvík Vaculík writes in the foreword, in another dimension he reaches toward the goodness and beauty of life and is essentially a poet. These short prose works therefore extend well beyond both the Zlín region and the period in which they were written, offering an engaging and readable reflection on contemporary Czech society. The foreword is written by Ludvík Vaculík.
