Description

Prof. RNDr. Jan Svoboda, DrSc., (1934) is an internationally renowned scientist whose results are widely used in medicine. At the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, he focuses on cellular and viral genetics and tumor viruses. He discovered the virogenes of retroviruses, explaining their emergence through integration into the cellular genome. He proposed and demonstrated that the viral oncogene v-src itself causes the formation of malignant tumors. He introduced and utilized methods of cellular genetics and later molecular biology techniques, including the cloning of the first unique gene in Czechoslovakia. For the discoveries in which Jan Svoboda participated, the Nobel Prize was awarded in 1975. Its laureates mentioned Svoboda as a personality who should have received it alongside them. In 2010, he received the prestigious domestic scientific award Czech Head. He has over two hundred scientific publications to his name.
