Description
Contributions from the 33rd annual Plzeň symposium, where researchers gathered to discuss issues related to the 19th century. Historians, philosophers, sociologists, literary scholars, art historians, ethnologists, and musicologists contemplated materials from the late Enlightenment to the beginnings of modernity, reflecting on aspects of mystifying behavior, from creating historical fictions for the needs of the developing national movement to variously motivated pseudonymous public appearances and treating the foreign as part of Czech national traditions. Under what conditions does mystification, which we most often consider a fraud or deception in everyday life, become a game or an opportunity for new knowledge, and when does the ethical understanding of mystification transition into the aesthetic or epistemological realm?
