Description
The next volume of the collected critical edition of the works of Jan Amos Comenius presents two sets of Comenius's Latin textbooks – Eruditionis scholasticae pars prima, Vestibulum and Eruditionis scholasticae pars II, Janua. Both sets of textbooks, intended for the first two grades of the lower gymnasium level, i.e., the three-year Latin school (the third level was called Atrium), were included by Comenius along with part of Atrium (which will be published in one of the upcoming volumes) in his collected edition Opera didactica omnia (ODO, Amsterdam 1657); this collected edition serves as the basis for our critical edition, and therefore this volume continues the numbering of the previously published parts of ODO under number 15. Both of these textbook sets represent, from Comenius's perspective, the pinnacle of his efforts to create the most perfect teaching aids for the three-year Latin school. With the exception of the actual teaching text of Janua (Janualis ... contextus), volume 15/IV brings the first critical editions of the included Comenius texts, and aside from a few translations of excerpts from the textbooks and prefaces, these are the first modern editions at all. In terms of the availability of Comenius's texts, it is significant that for the first time since the 17th century, one of Comenius's works is being published in a modern edition and in full.
