A unique book, originally written in English (On Behalf of Their Homeland) by one of the long-time officials and presidents of the exile Society for Arts and Sciences (SVU), Miloslav Rechcígl Jr. (*1930 in Mladá Boleslav), about a unique global organization that has done much for the foreign reputation of Czechoslovakia and its successor states. The Society for Arts and Sciences was founded in 1958 by Czech and Slovak intellectuals abroad who were forced to leave their homeland after the violent communist coup in 1948. The activities of the Society, which reflect the love and dedication of expatriate Czechs and Slovaks to their homeland and form an integral part of Czech and Slovak cultural history, developed primarily in the United States, but gradually the Society expanded its reach through local groups to countries in Western Europe and Australia. In his book, which combines the strengths of careful historical work with the eyewitness testimony of one of the most significant participants in the described events, Miloslav Rechcígl documented important events and activities of the Society for future historians and provided insight into the background of its important decisions.
