Description
Books of memories, mosaics of individual human destinies, enrich our understanding of any historical period with their immediacy and specific experiences. Pavel Spunar (*1928) grew up in an intellectual family in Prague with rich cultural roots and background, where the traditions of bourgeois culture from the late 19th century still resonated. The author reflects on his childhood and high school studies during the war and depicts the environment of the Faculty of Arts at Charles University in the pivotal years of 1947-1952. However, he devoted most of his memories to his work in the institutions of the Czechoslovak and Czech Academy of Sciences. The book is populated with characteristics of teachers, friends, and colleagues both at home and abroad. The memories testify to the author's deep relationship with the Academy of Sciences and remind us that the young post-war generation was not nearly as intoxicated by the contemporary communist slogans as is sometimes mistakenly assumed.
