Description
In June 1941, a quiet village in Central Lithuania is disturbed by the arrival of the Soviet army. The family of young Algjukas has only ten minutes to gather their belongings before they are forced onto an overcrowded freight train bound for the snow-covered plains of Siberia. Having lost their homeland and rural way of life, they must adapt to hunger, cold and harsh new conditions. Algjukas learns to face each day’s difficulties through the power of his imagination, a pencil, paper and a little book of Japanese poems, a haiku. Drawing on the story of her father’s childhood, writer Jurga Vile, together with artist Lina Itagaki, portrays one of the darkest periods in European history. Seen through a child’s eyes, it becomes a hymn to human endurance and hope. The contents are in Ukrainian.
