Description

The two-volume encyclopedia gathers research findings on more than 1100 ghettos in Eastern Europe. It offers detailed entries on numerous, including smaller, locations where European Jews were confined during World War II, before most of them were murdered. Ghettos that existed only for a short time are also included in the encyclopedia. Along with the comprehensive introductory texts and an extensive appendix, the entries provide information on varying naming conventions, geographical coordinates, and - at least for the larger ghettos - on Jewish life before the war. As far as known, they also provide information about the establishment of each ghetto, the daily lives of its residents, the institutional structure and leadership, acts of terror and murder, planned and actually executed resistance actions, and the number of survivors. Both structural regional differences and commonalities are clearly evident. This reference work will be an indispensable tool for the detailed study of individual persecution histories.
