Description
Central buildings, i.e. churches based on the floor plan of a circle, a square or polygon, a Greek cross, etc., have been among the most important paradigms of architecture in this era for Renaissance research since Jacob Burckhardt. This study examines the reasons for the extraordinary popularity of this architectural concept as well as the mechanisms of its economic success in architectural practice and theory, and furthermore fundamentally questions the categories of architectural typology of the 15th and 16th centuries in Italy. An important conclusion is that one cannot speak of a consistent ideal of central buildings in the era. However, overarching criteria of contemporary architecture can be identified that have significantly determined the spread of centralized building types.
