Description
April 1945: Led by Maxe Milch, nicknamed "Magermilch," Berlin students sent to Pilsen wander homeward amidst the chaos of war - among defeated soldiers, columns of prisoners, and streams of refugees, cross-country, through forests and fields, on foot, in freight cars, on trucks, with horse-drawn carts. They see the dead by the roadside, encounter American soldiers, and people who have barricaded themselves in their homes and yards. When they finally arrive home in the destroyed Berlin, no one finds what they had dreamed of during the long journey.
