Description
I dreamed of being my own cause and my own end; I now thought that literature would enable me to fulfil this vow. It would grant me an immortality to compensate for the eternity I had lost; there was no longer a God to love me, but I would burn in millions of hearts. By writing a work nourished by my own story, I would recreate myself and justify my existence. At the same time, I would serve humanity: what greater gift could I offer it than books? I was interested in both myself and others; I accepted my “incarnation”, but I did not want to renounce the universal. This project reconciled everything and flattered all the aspirations that had developed within me during those fifteen years.
