Description
This book presents a new theory of the universe developed over 20 years by Stephen Hawking and his close collaborator Thomas Hertog. One of the greatest questions Hawking sought to answer was how the universe could have created conditions so hospitable to life. His investigation into this mystery led to a crisis when the mathematics of the big bang appeared to predict countless universes, most too bizarre to support life. Working together at Cambridge, Hawking and Hertog developed a new quantum theory of the cosmos and discovered a deeper level of evolution in which the laws of physics themselves transform and simplify, until particles, forces and even time fade away. Their work suggests that the laws of physics are not fixed but are born and evolve together with the universe. Hertog explores black holes, the big bang and recent developments in string theory before presenting the final theory he and Hawking published near the end of Hawking’s life. This radical Darwinian perspective offers a new vision of the origins of the universe and our place within it.
