Description
This paperback collection includes “The Necklace,” Guy de Maupassant’s renowned story about Mathilde, who longs for high society despite being married to a poorly paid clerk. When her husband obtains an invitation to a grand ball at the Ministry of Education, Mathilde refuses to attend without a suitable gown and necklace. She borrows a diamond necklace from a friend, and their troubles begin. The volume also contains “The Piece of String,” about a villager wrongly accused of stealing a pocketbook, and “Mouche,” a poignant portrait of five cheerful bargemen and the woman who joins them on their journeys up and down the Seine, loving each of them freely.
