The Eyes Are The Best Part: A Novel – Kim Monika (2024)

Ji-won’s life tumbles into disarray after her Appa’s extramarital affair and subsequent departure. Her mother is distraught, her younger sister hurt and confused, her first-year college grades are failing, and her dreams are horrifying yet enticing. In them, Ji-won walks through bloody rooms full of eyes: succulent, salivatingly blue eyes shaped and shaded like those of George, Umma’s obnoxious new boyfriend. George has overstayed his welcome in the family’s claustrophobic apartment, boasting about his inflated consulting job, ogling Asian waitresses and treating Ji-won and her sister condescendingly, as if he deserves all of Umma’s adoration. Ji-won decides he deserves nothing from her family and will make sure of it. However many victims accumulate around her campus and however many people she must deceive and manipulate, her hunger and rage demand to be satisfied. Monika Kim’s brilliantly inventive and subversive novel follows a young woman unraveling amid a family falling apart and trying to find its way back to each other, offering a bold new voice in horror that leaves readers mesmerized and craving more.
