Description
This compelling historical novel follows newly graduated nurse Ruby May, who takes a position caring for the children of wealthy mill owners Charles and Lilian England in West Yorkshire in 1904. Hoping for a fresh start, Ruby moves to the isolated Hardcastle House, but it soon becomes clear that the beautiful and mysterious Mrs England is not quite what she seems. Distant and withdrawn, Lilian shows little interest in her children or charming husband and is far from the “angel of the house” Ruby expected. As Charles welcomes Ruby into the family, a series of strange events makes her question everything she thought she knew. Ostracised by the servants and increasingly uneasy, Ruby must face her own demons to prevent history from repeating itself. Set against the atmospheric West Yorkshire landscape, this slow-burning story of an Edwardian marriage explores power, control, courage, truth and the darkest deception.
