Description
Ren Yu is a swimmer. Her daily life begins and ends at the pool, her teammates are her only friends, and her coach is her guiding light. If she swims well enough, she will be scouted, earn a scholarship, attend a good school, and win her parents’ love. Her coach will be kind to her, and she will have a good life. But these are human concerns, belonging to those confined to land. Ren grew up on stories of creatures of the deep, of oceans and rivers, of beings that called sailors to their doom, dragged them down, and drowned them. She longs to become one of them: a mermaid. Ren aches to be in the water and dreams of the smell of chlorine and its feel on her skin. She will do anything to create a life in which she can be free, regardless of the pain, what anyone else thinks, or how much blood she has to spill. In the vein of Our Wives Under the Sea and The Vegetarian, Chlorine is a powerful tale of immigration, sapphic longing, and fierce, defiant becoming.
