Description
Hiruko comes from a now-vanished archipelago somewhere between China and Polynesia, and she and her friends have searched in vain for someone who speaks her native language. They finally find Susanoo, a sushi chef from the same nation, but he has lost the power of speech. As the companions try to help him regain his voice, they encounter magic radios, personality swaps and fears about climate change. Their friendship gives them strength against despair and inspires dreams of a better world, while a sceptical aphasia specialist in Copenhagen may be Hiruko’s last hope of hearing her mother tongue again. This astonishing, intrepid and cheerfully dystopian novel continues the adventures begun in Yoko Tawada’s Scattered All Over the Earth, with even more chaotic and poignant exploits.
