Description
When Asa’s husband takes a new job away from the city, the couple move to the countryside and settle next door to his parents. Through the long, hot summer, Asa tries to adjust to rural life, her in-laws’ constant presence, the emptiness of her existence and the incessant buzzing of cicadas. One day, while running an errand for her mother-in-law, she encounters a strange creature, follows it to a river embankment and falls into a hole that seems to have been made specifically for her. A series of bizarre experiences draws Asa deeper into the mysteries of the rural landscape and the family she has married into, forcing her to question her role in the world and eventually her own identity.
