In this collection, Michael Ondaatje returns to poetry to reflect on a life shaped by displacement and discovery. Born in Sri Lanka during the Second World War, sent as a child to school in London and later settled in Canada, he describes himself as a “mongrel”, formed by diverse cultures. Moving back and forth through time, the poems connect childhood in Sri Lanka with Moliere’s chair during his final stage performance, icons in Bulgarian churches, the Californian coast and beloved Canadian rivers. Memory merges with the present in an intimate meditation on a life of travel and observation, love and loss, shaped by every border crossed.
