Summer has come to Niflheim. The lichens are growing, the six-winged bat-like creatures are chirping, and, much to his own surprise, Mickey Barnes is still alive. This is largely because Commander Marshall believes that the colony’s creeper neighbours possess an antimatter bomb, and that Mickey is the only person preventing them from using it. Mickey is now just another colonist. Instead of cleaning out the reactor core, he spends his days cleaning rabbit hutches. It is not a bad life, but it will not last. The antimatter powering the colony is running low, and Marshall wants his bomb back. If Mickey agrees to retrieve it, he will be giving up the only thing that has kept him safe from execution. If he refuses, he may doom the entire colony. Meanwhile, the creepers have problems of their own and will not surrender the bomb without receiving something in return. Once again, the fate of two species rests in Mickey’s hands. This time, however, if something goes wrong, he will not be coming back.
