In 1942, sixteen-year-old Cilka Klein is taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp, where the commandant, Schwarzhuber, notices her long, beautiful hair and separates her from the other women prisoners. Cilka quickly learns that power, even when unwillingly given, means survival. After liberation, the Russians charge her as a collaborator and send her to Vorkuta, a desolate and brutal prison camp in Siberia inside the Arctic Circle. Innocent and imprisoned once again, Cilka faces new and horribly familiar challenges in a daily struggle for survival. She befriends a woman doctor and learns to nurse the sick under unimaginable conditions. When she cares for a man called Alexandr, Cilka discovers that there is still room in her heart for love. Based on what is known of Cilka Klein’s time in Auschwitz and on the experiences of women in Siberian prison camps, this novel follows one woman’s fierce determination to survive against all odds.
