China’s economic miracle is happening despite, rather than because of, its 900 million peasants, who are absent from portraits of booming Shanghai and Beijing. Many members of China’s underclass still live under a feudal system unchanged since the fifteenth century. Chinese journalists Wu Chuntao and Chen Guidi return to Wu’s home province of Anhui, one of China’s poorest regions, to conduct a three-year investigation into the lives of its rural population. They ask whether the peasants have been betrayed by the revolution carried out in their name by Mao and his successors. Through four dramatic accounts of individual people from Anhui, the book portrays daily life among China’s rural poor and the petty dictators who control its villages and counties. It examines the consequences of their bullying despotism and gives a voice to people otherwise unheard, looking beneath the gloss of the new China to reveal the reality of life for its vast underclass.
