Description
This expansive coming-of-age novel follows Steph Harper, a young woman determined to become the first Cherokee astronaut and eventually travel to the moon. When Steph was five, her mother fled an abusive husband with Steph and her younger sister, seeking refuge in a small Cherokee community. Steph grows up convinced that only her ambition can save her, but her pursuit of the stars strains her relationships with the three women who know and love her best: her younger sister Kayla, an artist whose efforts to appear good lead her life in unexpected directions; her college girlfriend Della, who is reclaiming her identity after being removed from her family as a child through a challenge to the Indian Child Welfare Act; and her mother Hannah, who has presented the family’s history as an inspiration while concealing the truth about her own past. Spanning three decades and several continents, the novel interweaves their lives in a story of mothers and daughters, love and sacrifice, alienation and heartbreak, terror and wonder.
