Description
This English-language collection presents The Awakening, now regarded as one of the boldest and earliest works of feminist fiction, alongside a selection of Kate Chopin’s strikingly perceptive short stories, introduced by Dr J. Michelle Coghlan, a specialist in American literature. When The Awakening was first published, readers and critics were scandalized by its story of Edna Pontellier, who spends a holiday with her husband and two young children at a sleepy resort on the Louisiana Gulf Coast. Pursued by the charming unmarried Robert Lebrun, Edna moves beyond flirtation into an affair that awakens her desire to escape her passionless marriage, her children and the strict conventions of nineteenth-century society.
