In February 1959, nine experienced hikers died mysteriously in the Russian Ural Mountains at an elevation known as Dead Mountain. Unexplained injuries, signs that they had cut their way out of their tent and fled without proper clothing or shoes, a strange final photograph, and elevated radiation levels on some clothing have prompted decades of speculation. This work of literary nonfiction draws on the hikers’ journals and photographs, rarely seen government records, dozens of interviews, and the author’s retracing of their journey in the Russian winter. It presents a portrait of young Soviet-era adventurers while interweaving the hikers’ story, the investigators’ efforts, and the author’s search for what really happened at Dyatlov Pass.
