Description
Suchi first notices Haiwen in their Shanghai neighbourhood when she is seven, drawn by the sound of his violin. Their childhood friendship grows into love, but in 1947 Haiwen secretly joins the Nationalist army to save his brother from the draft, leaving Suchi only his violin and a note that says, “Forgive Me.” Sixty years later, the recently widowed Haiwen sees Suchi in a Los Angeles grocery store. To him, it feels like a second chance, but Suchi has survived by refusing to look back. In the twilight of their lives, can they reclaim their past and the love they lost? This moving historical novel follows the separated lovers through six decades of turbulent Chinese history, moving between Haiwen’s journey from the present into the past and Suchi’s story from childhood to the present.
