One July night, ten-year-old Ethan Marsh and his best friend Billy fall asleep in a tent in Ethan’s backyard on a quiet New Jersey cul-de-sac. In the morning, Ethan is alone, the tent has been sliced open, and Billy has disappeared without a trace. Thirty years later, Ethan returns reluctantly to his childhood home. Plagued by bad dreams and insomnia, he begins noticing strange activity in the middle of the night: someone is walking around the cul-de-sac, and signs of Billy’s presence keep appearing in the backyard. Ethan investigates what really happened, following the trail into the woods surrounding Hemlock Circle, where a mysterious institute conducts secretive research on a crumbling estate. The closer he comes to the truth, the more he understands that no place, not even the quietest suburban street, is completely safe, and that the past can haunt the present.
