Description
Twentieth-century histories of science have focused on relativity and quantum mechanics. Yet quietly in the background, a third field of exploration has developed with equally important implications for our understanding of the universe: the study of plasma. Plasma is the fourth state of matter, while the other three—gas, liquid and solid—emerge from plasma. This book reveals how more than 99% of the universe is made of plasma and describes two gigantic plasma clouds, known as the Kordylewski Clouds, hovering between Earth and the Moon and only recently discovered by astronomers in Hungary. It also presents discoveries previously unknown outside narrow academic disciplines, including evidence that under certain circumstances plasma displays features suggesting that it may be alive in some sense. Plasma clouds have developed double helices, banks of cells and crystals, as well as filaments and junctions that could control the flow of electric currents and generate an intelligence similar to machine intelligence. We may in fact have been looking for signs of extraterrestrial life in the wrong place. Robert Temple, a bestselling author, has followed plasma research for decades and worked with several leading scientists in the field, including Nobel laureates Paul Dirac, David Bohm, Peter Mitchell and Chandra Wickramasinghe, who co-wrote an academic paper with Temple.
