Description
Set in Dublin in the 1920s, this historical novel follows Winnie O'Leary as Ireland’s war for independence tears the country apart. Winnie supports the cause but does not seek trouble, until rebel Joseph Burke enters her workplace and their first encounter begins an unexpected romance. Joseph’s family shelters fugitives and transports weapons, while his mother and sisters demand commitment to the fight. As Winnie faces the choice between joining Joseph and placing her loved ones in deadly danger or waiting for a peace that may never come, courage, heartbreak and love shape the lives of ordinary people. The novel is inspired by the story of Sheila O'Flanagan's grandmother.
