Between 1942 and 1944, 15,000 children under the age of fifteen passed through the Terezin Concentration Camp; fewer than 100 survived. Through poems and pictures created by the young inmates, this book reveals the daily misery of these uprooted children, as well as their courage, optimism, hopes and fears. The Terezin ghetto, also known as Theresienstadt, lay in the hills outside Prague and was used to conceal the Nazi genocide of the Jews. Presented as the “Fuhrer’s gift to the Jews,” this model ghetto hosted a Red Cross inspection in 1944. Culture flourished there because of its many artists and intellectuals, alongside starvation, disease and the constant fear of transports to the death camps of the east. Every inhabitant was condemned in advance to die. The children’s innocent and honest poems and drawings offer a view of life in the ghetto through their eyes and remain haunting reminders of what no child should ever have to see. This expanded edition is published in cooperation with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
