Sylvia Plath began keeping a diary as a young child. By the time she reached Smith College, where this book begins, she had established an almost daily journaling routine, using her entries as a sourcebook for her writing. Plath once called her journal her “Sargasso,” a repository of imagination, “a litany of dreams, directives, and imperatives,” and these pages contain the seeds of much of her work. Her ambitions as a writer were urgent and ultimately all-consuming, demanding a heat, a fantastic chaos and a violence that burned straight through her. The intensity of this struggle appears in her journals with unsparing clarity, revealing both the frequent desperation of her circumstances and the courage with which she confronted her demons.
