Description
In the summer of 1974, a heatwave blankets Boston, while Mary Pat Fennessey struggles to stay ahead of the bill collectors in Southie, the Irish American housing-project enclave where she has spent her entire life. When her teenage daughter Jules stays out late and does not come home, a young Black man is found dead that same night after being struck by a subway train under mysterious circumstances. The events seem unconnected, but Mary Pat’s desperate search for her daughter leads her to questions that trouble Marty Butler, the local Irish mob chieftain, and the men who work for him. Set during the violent months when Boston’s desegregation of public schools erupts into conflict, this thriller explores revenge, family love, festering hatred, criminality and power, while portraying the dark heart of American racism.
