Description
Based on Gregory David Roberts’s extraordinary true story, this novel follows an armed robber and heroin addict who escapes from an Australian prison to India in the early 1980s and lives in a Bombay slum. There he establishes a free health clinic, joins the mafia as a money launderer, forger and street soldier, learns Hindi and Marathi, falls in love and endures time in an Indian jail. He also acts in Bollywood and fights with the Mujahedeen in Afghanistan. Shantaram is at once an adventure, a love story and a fugitive’s vision, combining thrilling action with moral purpose and tender lyricism. Roberts wrote it three times after prison guards destroyed the first two versions.
