Description
This postwar classic by Bohumil Hrabal follows a young man’s coming of age in German-occupied Czechoslovakia and is among his most beloved and accessible works. It offers a subtle, poetic portrait of Milos Hrma, a timid young railway apprentice who shields himself with fantasy from a reality filled with cruelty and grief. As he watches trains rush past day after day, he is tormented by the suspicion that he himself is being watched and by fears of impotence. Hrma finally affirms his manhood and, with a sense of peace and purpose he has never known before, heroically confronts a trainload of Nazis.
