Description
Named one of the BBC’s “100 Novels That Shaped Our World”, this bestselling American classic of youthful rebellion and coming of age follows the conflict between the Greasers and the wealthy Socs on the streets of Tulsa. Fourteen-year-old Ponyboy is a fiercely loyal Greaser, a brawler, chainsmoker and dreamer, but a single murderous catastrophe tears him from his old life and overturns everything he thinks he knows. Written by S. E. Hinton at the age of seventeen, The Outsiders exposes the hopes and fears behind teenage bravado in a world of drive-ins, drag races and switchblades. This powerful young adult novel introduced America to a new kind of anti-hero from the wrong side of the class divide. It was adapted into a 1983 film starring Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe and Tom Cruise, with an introduction by Jodi Picoult.
