Description
He is one of the greatest Czechs, the creator of our national music, without whose work we cannot even imagine Czech culture. Nevertheless, he wrote his boyhood diaries and love letters in German and learned to speak and write Czech correctly only long after his thirties. And that is far from the only circumstance that may surprise us about the author of The Bartered Bride or My Country. A lot of books have been published about Bedřich Smetana, and it might seem that his life has been described in the smallest details. However, the more we learn about him, the more we also discover that there is still much to explore. There is certainly not just one universally valid perspective on our 'most national' composer. The docudrama Friedrich, known as Bedřich, depicts his dramatic fate, as well as his time and the stories of the people who surrounded him, loved and supported him, or made his journey more difficult. It is also a reflection on why Smetana was so often used for propaganda, perhaps more than any other of our artists. And finally, it raises a few questions about ourselves, to which we still do not have answers.
