Description
In 1964, at a youth festival in East Berlin, a student from the East falls in love with a student from the West. He helps her escape, and they get married. Only after her death does seventy-year-old Kašpar learn what his wife Birgit had hidden from him all her life: before fleeing, she gave birth to a daughter and left her in East Germany. Kašpar does what she always wanted but couldn't do – he searches for her. The search becomes a journey into the past and a confrontation with the wounds and scars left by East Germany, the upheaval of 1989, and the adaptation to the West. When he finds his daughter, she is married and living in a neo-Nazi nationalist community in the countryside. Her fourteen-year-old daughter Sigrun is happy that her grandfather has suddenly entered her life, just as he is delighted with his granddaughter. But his world is as foreign to her as hers is to him. Can he get close to her?
