The novel The Last Love of Emperor Charles deals with the forgotten fate of Guillaume, the only historically documented illegitimate son of Emperor Charles IV. The Czech king and Roman emperor likely met Guillaume's mother in 1365 during one of his trips to Avignon. At that time, Charles IV was at the height of his power and had recently entered into a favorable political marriage with Elizabeth of Pomerania. Yet, now, almost at fifty years old, he realizes that he lacks a deep emotional relationship in his life. Just when he was about to give up on his dream of personal happiness, he met the charming and noble Margaret of Arles. He spent idyllic days with her, and upon returning to Prague, he learned that Margaret had given birth to his son Guillaume. We will closely follow the difficult fate of Margaret of Arles and her son Guillaume, who will meet his imperial father only on the brink of adulthood during Charles IV's last journey to France. We will witness Guillaume's challenging search for a relationship with his influential, beloved, but always distant father, set against the backdrop of court intrigues and groundbreaking historical events of the 1370s and 1380s.
