Description
The film Snake Venom is one of the lesser-known works from the late career of Czech film magician František Vláčil, yet it deserves attention. Together with Irena Charvátová, the author of the concept, Vláčil wrote the script for this chamber drama, in which an eighteen-year-old girl arrives to meet her previously unknown father working at a drilling rig. She gradually learns the reason for his alcohol addiction, from which she manages to pull him away for a while. The main roles are excellently portrayed by Josef Vinklář, who was no stranger to alcohol problems, and Ilona Svobodová, for whom this was a debut performance (in the same year, she tested her comedic skills in the film Love at Second Sight directed by Ladislav Rychman). The sense of hopelessness is enhanced by the story's locations: a snow-covered plain with a few trailers and a village pub as the only escape point.
