Franz Mesmer (Alan Rickman) tried to apply unconventional treatment methods based on his theory of 'animal magnetism.' Experts dismissed it until he relieved the pain of blind pianist Maria Theresa Paradies (Amanda Ooms), performing at the Viennese court, in front of everyone. The intimate closeness between the doctor and his beautiful patient served as an excuse for Mesmer's critics to further humiliate the controversial healer and ridicule his unorthodox medical methods.
