In Castle Nine, you take on the role of an influential player whose goal is to hire the best characters and create a powerful 3×3 card grid. Each character, whether from the castle or the underbelly, brings unique abilities that activate immediately upon hiring, as well as specific conditions for scoring at the end of the game. Strategically place your characters and watch the herald figure, which determines from which location characters can currently be hired.

The game ends once each player has taken their nine turns and laid out all nine cards in their grid. The winner is the one who can gather the most points through their choices. During your turn, you can optionally use a key to move the herald to the opposite location or to refresh the card offer, allowing you access to new strategies and combinations. Then, you must buy one of the available cards, use its effect, and finally move the herald and replenish the offer. You can also take a card for free face down and gain coins and keys, but without any point benefit at the end of the game.
