The Ugly Miss is the story of the distant auditor Hana Kalvodová (Dana Medřická) arriving to investigate embezzlement at a publishing house in Liberec, where the gallant editor Jiří Štefl (Karel Höger) works. This psychological drama with elements of a detective story relies on strong performances and the brilliant chemistry of the central duo. It is also captivating thanks to the camera work of the experienced Rudolf Stahl – a series of visual compositions capturing the emotional states of the heroine, shots composed in depth, and night scenes with a noir touch. The film also has documentary value due to its capture of several now non-existent locations in Liberec. In contrast to the dug-up and noisy streets of the city, nature seen from the top of Ještěd appears serene. However, the escape from problems and the dirty reality cannot last forever.
